Benedictine Silence
Time to Restore
Umbria is a mystical land that invites us to disconnect from the world around us, recharge, reflect and reconnect with ourselves.
Within this region, the Valnerina is undoubtedly one of the most peaceful, secluded and inspiring areas, with its hermitages and small villages hidden among the woods.
Many saints were born here, while others found inspiration here — extraordinary figures who have shaped the spiritual, ethical and cultural history of Italy and the world.
Saint Benedict of Norcia, Patron Saint of Europe and a pivotal figure in the preservation of Western culture.
Saint Rita of Cascia, the saint of the impossible.
Saint Francis of Assisi, Patron Saint of Italy.
To visit the places where these extraordinary people were born and found inspiration for their lives, to explore their teachings, to breathe this pure mountain air and experience the harmony between heaven and earth — in places where silence allows us to encounter our deepest selves — is what a journey to Norcia can offer.
A HOME IN THE HEART OF UMBRIA
A place where you can feel at home, within a 16th-century Relais & Châteaux that embodies the essence of Umbria’s hidden soul.
Palazzo Seneca is an intimate “jewel box” where the artistry and craftsmanship of historic Umbrian artisans come together in an elegant, effortless fusion of heritage and contemporary design.
At the heart of the palazzo is Vespasia, our Michelin-starred and Green Star restaurant, its true culinary gem. Its dishes celebrate the finest products and traditions of the Apennines, enriched by the origins and life journeys of Chef Fabio Cappiello and Sous Chef Toshimitsu Kido.
The atmosphere is peaceful, elegant yet relaxed. During the warmer months, weather permitting, guests can enjoy our charming private courtyard garden.

THE VALUE OF TIME
There is no “right” itinerary to follow.
- If you feel like going out: take a leisurely stroll through Norcia’s historic centre, discover local artisan shops and hidden corners, or get in the car and reach some of our favourite places within less than an hour.
- If you prefer to stay in: enjoy a long breakfast, have tea in the lounge, take a quiet pause in your room, and simply embrace the silence.
- If you want a little of both: take a short outing and return to the palazzo, without ever having to rush.
Luxury, here, is freedom: everything is within easy reach.

OUR SUGGESTIONS
Norcia and the surrounding Valnerina invite you to slow down and discover a landscape shaped by spirituality, silence and centuries-old traditions.
- Attend the Benedictine Vespers in Norcia at the Abbey of San Benedetto in Monte. Please check the abbey’s website for current times and availability.
- Visit the crypt of the Basilica of San Benedetto, traditionally associated with the place where Saint Benedict was baptised.
- Attend Sunday Mass in the Basilica of Norcia, or experience the Benedictine Mass with Gregorian chant at the Abbey.
- Take a “Walk of Silence”: choose an easy route along the former Norcia–Spoleto railway, through the marcite of Norcia and along the Sordo River; or, for a more demanding experience, hike to the great Cross of Monte Patino at 1,880 metres, with approximately 1,000 metres of elevation gain starting from Forca di Ancarano.
- Climb to the Scoglio di Santa Rita in Roccaporena: a remarkable spiritual and natural experience, physically demanding, with a 120-metre elevation gain and 320 steps.
- Visit the Eremo delle Carceri in Assisi, a monastery built around the caves where Saint Francis withdrew to pray with his followers, and continue to San Damiano, where Saint Francis wrote the Canticle of the Creatures.
THEN, WELLNESS: ENDING THE DAY THE RIGHT WAY
After the table, wellness is the natural next step.
Sauna, Turkish bath, whirlpool, relaxation area and herbal teas.
There is no need to do a lot. Just do it well.
And in the evening, our turndown service prepares your room for the night, with the discreet attention to detail that discerning luxury travellers immediately recognise.
